Breeding Process With The Shire Sires

There are many reasons why people decide to breed their dog and in doing so become a dog breeder. If you’re considering breeding your dog using one a Shire Sire stud please follow the below steps and feel free to reach out to us with any questions.

Steps For Breeding

Timing is everything! To increase the chance of a successful pregnancy and quantity of puppies start out the process by BOOKING ONE OF OUR STUDS. This will ensure we are prepared to be ready when your female is in heat.

Once booked watch your female for signs that she is coming into heat. LET US KNOW at the first signs of bleeding.

Next work with your local vet (we can make local recommendations) to complete a simple blood test called a progesterone test. This test will determine when your female is ovulating. For best chances of success, we provide up to two matings which will occur on the dates provided by your vet.

After we know the optimal dates we will coordinate your 2 mating sessions, either to meet with one of our studs in person or to instruct you when and how to administer the two samples that will been shipped.

Finally, 4 weeks after the mating or insemination an experienced vet will be able to detect a pregnancy on ultrasound. An X ray can be performed at 8 weeks to determine the number of puppies. If your dog doesn’t fall pregnant we offer ONE return service on her next cycle.
